What are Mala Beads or Prayer Beads?

Prayer Beads or Malas are a tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetition of Buddha’s name or during prayer. Mฤlฤ is a Sanskrit word meaning “garland”. Some people also use the term “mantra beads”, “Buddha beads” “prayer beads”, “meditation beads” and so forth.

In traditional terms, a Mala is a strand of 108, 54, 27 or 21 beads and is usually hand knotted with wood, stone or natural seed beads such as Ruraksha seeds. Mala beads are commonly known to be used in spiritual practice of Japa Meditation.

Traditionally a mala is made up of many parts including: Beads or stones, marker beads, counting beads, knotting cord/knots between beads, Guru bead, tassel and spacer beads. A mala necklace or bracelet can be made of one single type of bead or stone, or a variety of beads and stones.

More recently Mala Beads have become popular and used in a variety of ways and spiritual communities, chakra balance, yoga practice, and meditation & prayer by people of many faiths.

Many people wear Malas for reasons other than spiritual practice + meditation or yoga.

Some people wear their Mala simply for the beauty, the energy they resonate, for intentions and manifesting desires as they walk their sacred path or spiritual journey.

However you choose to wear or use your Mala is always perfect in every way.

“Prayer beads or Malas (Sanskrit: mฤlฤ “garland”) are a traditional tool used to count the number of times a mantra is recited, breaths while meditating, counting prostrations, or the repetitions of a Buddha’s name or during prayer –
much like the Catholic rosary. “

This sฤdhanฤ (practice) is known in Sanskrit as japa. Malas are typically made with 18, 27, 54 orย 108 beads. In Tibetan Buddhism, malas ofย 108 beads are used. Traditionally mala necklaces come as a string of 108 beads (plus one for the “guruย bead”). The number’s significance isย open to interpretation. Butย 108ย has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga

It is customary to hold your malaย in your right hand, draped between your middle and index fingers. Starting at the guruย bead, use your thumb to count each smallerย bead, pulling it toward you as you recite your mantra.

Yvette uses a combination of natural gemstones, crystal, wood and other materials since they hold different frequencies and many different healing qualities. Yvette designs each mala beads necklace or other piece of spiritual healing jewelry with the intention to use with meditation or yoga, Chakra healing or to help clear a resonating physical or emotional issue. She choose stones with specific healing properties but also for the beauty and aesthetics of how the stones, wood and metals look as a whole.

When Yvette is creating a mala bead necklace or other spiritual healing jewelry design, she allows her intuition to guider her, and the design just sort of flows out until it is complete and uniquely beautiful.

Most True Healing Source meditation necklaces and mala beads are one of a kind creations with specific healing properties. Other jewelry such as mala bracelets, can mostly be duplicated unless I use a special one of a kind stone for the focal point.
